Maintaining your hair colour

Picture you leaving the hair salon with a beautiful newly fresh shiny hair colour and you feel amazing, but unfortantly when not looking after your hair it turns all dull faded and you feel awful. I am here to help you! Here are a few tips to help you maintain your hair colour!

Good colour starts with healthy hair.

HYDRATE!! W hile bleaching your hair isn’t the best way to start, it is necessary to do in order to achieve a lighter or bright colour.  Unhealthy, damaged hair will not hold colour well and being dry it loses its colour quickly. You may make it from black hair to blue in a week by bleaching your hair twice a day but that blue won’t hold because your hair is in awful condition. Be patient with your journey from dark hair to light hair. Make sure to nurture your hair. Hair masks and repair products are your best friends!

High quality hair colour

After healthy hair, the next most important thing is a very good hair colour product. I highly recommend going to a salon to get your hair done as we know what we are doing. . Since salon brands are gentle on your hair, it’s totally fine, and really highly recommended as they know when enough is enough with your hair.

Rinse with cool water.

This is actually a best tip if you have a funky colour in your hair. If you skip all other tips (please don’t, especially healthy hair!) this is the one to follow. Warm water opens the hair cuticle allowing colour to escape. I’m not saying you need to wash your hair with ice cold water, but in reality, the colder the better. Just use cold water for your hair and crank the heat up when doing your body.
While we’re on the subject of water, it should be noted that swimming in chlorinated water is awful for your hair colour. For good measures, just keep your hair dry as much as possible or smother your hair in conditioner before going in.

Use the right shampoo & conditioner!

The main step to long lasting colour is to use a colour save/protecting shampoo and conditioner. Depending on your colour you may need toning (e.g. for blondes that tend to go brassy, a purple shampoo is needed!) Stay away from a clarifying shampoo this stripes and gets rid of the colouring in your hair (i.e head and shoulders).

Sulfates and alcohol based products are another two huuuge things that will fade any hair color. Sulfate free shampoos can be kind of tricky to find sometimes, but they’re definitely worth switching to. Even with sulfate free shampoo, you should still try to cut back on shampoo use. Shampoo strips your hair of it’s natural oils, as well as the colour. If you’re lucky enough to not have super greasy hair skip washing every other day and use a dry shampoo on your off days. My dry shampoo of choice is Wella “Dry Me” It’s a little bit more expensive than others I’ve found and tried but easily the best!

Avoid heat styling.

If you must heat style (hey, I feel ya!), use a protectant! This Wella one is my personal favourite, I’ve been using it for a while now.

Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

Just like your skin, the sun isn’t necessarily good for your hair colour. The sun rays will bleach your hair which makes your colour fade. Try wearing a hat if you’ll be spending a long time in the sun. Highly recommended applying conditioner to your hair or even a leave in spray!

Low maintenance hair colour?

sarah jessica parker - hair  Beauty Look Book: Sarah Jessica Parkers style and hair looks (Glamour.com UK):  I couldn't help but wonder which titles Sarah Jessica Parker would choose for her Bookprint...:

Balayage has been around for quite some time now but its one of the most popular hair colouring techniques today. There is a lot of people wearing this but Sarah Jessica Parker is the queen of this colouring technique.

What is Balayage?

It is a French word meaning sweep or to paint. It is a sun kissed natural looking colour for your hair, the principle idea is less is more! This can all be done freehand without foil or meche. A lot of celebs are wearing this hair colour technique, its all over the place even catwalks and red carpets. Balayage works for all lengths except very short cropped hair.

Does it require a lot of maintenance?

No, very little actually! It grows out beautiful and naturally so there is no obvious growth line which can be worn longer between appointments. Balayage isn’t all about the blondes, it can be any colour you want! (red heads, brunettes, crazy colour tend, ANY!) To protect this style hair using a colour protection shampoo and conditioner really helps, I recommend Wella SP Colour Save, Regular treatments and heat protection when styling the hair. For blondes I would recommend Wella SP Silver Shampoo to clean up the blonde and get rid of any brassy tones. This hairstyle can be worn both straight or curly!

Debs Hair Tips & Inspo

Debs season is upon us and I had one of my followers ask me to do a small blog post about debs hair. You may be going to a debs this year and your unsure on what to do with your hair!

When choosing your debs hairstyle, make sure to keep your dress in mind. Your hairstyle and your dress should complement one another.

  • Arrive to the salon with clean dry hair. Wash hair night before with a volumize shampoo and no conditioner! This will give a great result for your hair style.
  • In the lead up to your debs try to keep your hair in tip top condition
  • Wear a button up top to the hair salon so you don’t have to take it off over your head afterwards. This will avoid messing up your hair style.
  • To keep your hair intact for the whole day make sure to pop a mini hairspray and a few bobby pins into your bag. Using these to fix any fly away strands that have come loose.
  • If you have extensions make sure they are clean, dry and brushed through. This is a time saver for your stylist and then can focus on your finished look opposed to be worrying about the extensions.
  • Bring as many images for inspiration!

Hope these tip have helped you. Have you any additional tips to share with us?

Here are a few Hair pictures for some inspiration:

Signs you NEED A HAIRCUT / NEW LOOK

IF YOU’RE CONFUSSED WHETHER YOU NEED A NEW HAIR STYLE, TAKE SOME INSPIRATION FROM KIM KARDASHIAN…

4 signs you needs a new look

The internet went into meltdown again this week when we seen a picture of Kim Kardashian with her hair chopped into a blunt lob but matter of fact turns out the new look  – ITS A WIG!!

At this point I think if we see any Kardashian/Jenner change there hairstyle – Its not real..

13767588_160562127701392_2082358511_n

A lot of people this year have gone for the chop and got a complete new hairstyle (Like you may know I myself got a few inches off my hair) But I got to say I have loved my hair since I got it done.

Here are questions to ask yourself that may help you make up your mind if it’s time for a change, and do you need a haircut…

* Did your hairstylist cut layers the last time you got your hair cut, and now your hair is nearing one length? It’s time for a trim at the very-least.

* Have you had the exact same length for the past five years, and to ensure your dead ends are gone, you only get a few cm chopped?

* Is your hair looking thinner? The longer fine hair grows, the thinner it looks. A shorter cut can give you the appearance of thicker, healthier hair.

* What sort of maintenance is involved in new style and can I handle it? Are you ready for high maintenance?

* What is the growing out process going to be like?

I know it seems silly to put so much thought into getting a haircut, but as anyone who has ever had a bad haircut knows, it’s best to really be sure about these things!

Are you considering cutting your hair?

Any more questions, Let me know, and if you do get the chop Make sure you tag me in pictures 🙂

Healthy Summer Hair

Summer is nearly over but that doesn’t mean people are finished going on holidays! Or that Ireland might just get another few nice days in the month of August (Fingers Crossed). What can be better than warm sunny days, floral dresses and icy cold drinks?

That sounds amazing but summer brings a few challenges to our hair, Summer is hard on our hair! Summer heat can damage our hair, gives us oily scalps, make our hair lighter. But, fear not! I am here to your rescue and will share my amazing and simple summer hair tips! The heat and humitidy here has been hard so I thought now was the right time:

  • No Heat! First way of protecting your hair is avoid styling your hair with heat as much as possible. I know this could be a challenge for some people but there is a lot of heatless hairstyles ideas that can be done. If you find your hair will go frizzy than a serum is what your need.

  • Condition Condition Condition!! We see it to often, coloured hair that gets ruined and damaged from all the salt water and sun exposure. If you are going to be spending a long day in the sun than I would advise you to apply a conditioner  all over your hair when dry and leave it soak in. When you are home apply a treatment to your hair, a treatment can help revitalize and rehydrate your hair, bringing it back to life.

  • Cover it up! If your planning on being out in the sun for a good length of time consider wearing a hat or scarf to protect your hair and scalp. This also helps to keep coloured hair from fading and turning brassy.

  •  Chlorine Damage! If you spend a lot of time in the pool and find your hair goes green (yes that can happen!) than you need a clarifying shampoo to help remove the chlorine build up and stops it from going green. If your hair is dry it is like a sponge and would be 1 of the first to experience this!

Wella Professionals Pure Purifying Shampoo

  • Drink more water! We will never hear enough of this! This also does wonders to your hair aswell as body & mind. Water also hydrates your hair and scalp – Otherwise hydrate your hair inside out!

Let me know if you have used any of these tips or if you have any of your own!

Wishing you a very lovely summer and healthy beautiful hair!

Introducing Nioxin!

Nioxin_(logo)

One of the things I most enjoy about being a hairstylist is always getting to try the new products!

Firstly I will start with a little inside on the brand Nioxin. When founder Eva Graham experienced thinning hair after giving birth to her first child, she began to investigate the idea of treating the scalp with skincare methods to promote hair growth. This is when Nioxin came to origin. To define Nioxin, it is the hair care product specially invented for thinning hair solution. As we do facial on face, similarly our Scalp requires attention & care and Nioxin works on scalp health providing strength and nourishment which results into hair thicker & fuller look.

This brand is:

  • No1. globally selling salon brand for thicker fuller looking hair.
  • Winner of the stylist Choice Award for “Favourite Thinning Hair Care” since 2002Claims_d
  • Most awarded brand for thinning hair in the US
  • More than 25 years of dedicated research
  • More than 70%  of users notice thicker, fuller looking hair in just 30 days.

At The Salon@Georges Court Waterford City, we have the full range of Nioxin hair care systems to match and treat your hair issue, giving your hair growth the boost it needs. Nioxin is not just for woman it is unisex!

Strong and healthy hair begins below the surface of the scalp. Follicles can easily be clogged with sebum, hardened collagen and layers of dead skin cells. If follicles are clogged, strands cannot grow from them. The more follicles that are blocked, the fewer strands of hair that will grow. This is what makes the scalp noticeable and gives the impression of balding. Hair that does manage to grow will be weak which means hair will break easily, and they will thin out.

At the salon we offer a consultation using a Nioscope, a specialised magnifier to study the scalp, we take a very close up look at the scalp, magnified to 200%. We can show clients before and after images of their scalp so that you can see for yourself how the salon treatments are producing results. Unlike any old microscope, a Nioscope projects the view onto a monitor so clients can see their own scalp on a screen. A dermabrasion treatment is then carried out.

0809_nioscope

Dermabrasion treatment is a facial for the scalp. This is an in salon treatment and what it does is it removes dead skin cells & product build up, increases circulation and excess sebum to renew scalp skin to provide the perfect foundation for Thicker, fuller looking hair. This would be the first step and recommended to get done every 4-6 weeks than you are set to start the subscribed 3 part system which is an at home process.

Derma-Renew-Therapy_d

Nioxin system has 6 different treatment based on the type of hair of an individual. Everyone have different kind of hair ranging from thin ,length, natural, highly dense, coloured ,straight ,curly ..oh this list could go on & on without an end. So that is why Nioxin came up with six parts based on type of hair . You will be provided with best suited category of Nioxin product ranging from 1 to 6 to suit your hair, but whatever you do, DO NOT pick your own number out as using the wrong number will be no benefit. You will need to wash your hair every day to see a quicker result.

In your 3 part system there is:

  • Cleanser – This is your shampoo it removes follicle clogging sebum and environmental residues from the scalp skin and hair.
  • Optimise – This is your conditioner it is very lightweight and helps provides moisture, balance and helps the hair by reducing hair loss due to breakage. With this conditoner you massage into the scalp.
  • Treat – This is your scalp treatment it increases the diameter of each hair strand. Helps provide a refreshed scalp. Some users report redness of the scalp, which generally disappears after a week or two of continued use.  If the redness persists, try using either less frequently and/or in smaller doses.

MH_Nioxin-systems

There is another product called Diaboost which  is a leave in treatment used to increase the thickness of each exisiting hair strand for a fuller looking head of hair. This penetrates the hair and makes it manageable, full aswell as strengthening the hair at home. This allows it to grow longer and its as if you had up to 11,000 more hair strands. You apply this on clean damp hair directly on the root are to cover the scalp and massage in. Comb through hair and than blowdry and usual.

There is more products in the Nioxin range including more treatments and styling products. Information about these will be up in another blog post as these products are the main priority. If you look after your skin why not look after your hair!!

If you worry about thinning hair your not alone 😔
Thinning hair is a major issue, more than 50% of men & women suffer from thinning hair at some point in their life.
