Hair Extensions at Grow Unltd!

Hey guys,
So as you may know few weeks ago I went and got my first set of extensions! I am used to wearing clip in extensions and over a year ago I chopped my long hair off to a bob style. I was sick of clipping extensions in and waiting for my hair to grow so I finally gave in and got hair extensions that will last a few months.

I went and treated myself to new hair at Grow Unltd. Grow Unltd is in Waterford City and I would not look past them! They specialise in hair extensions as health and growth is their goal! They are also the only Kevin Murphy concept salon in Waterford. When I put one foot in the door I was amazed at how fabulous the salon looks and I was also greeted by friendly staff straight away.
I decided to do a blog post about my hair extensions as I got loads of people asking about them and complimenting them. This post will also help if you are thinking about getting extensions. Hair extensions are a great way to create that instant new look if its by length, thickness or even changing your colour. Here are some pictures of their amazing work:

Starting off I have fine hair but a lot of it and because of this I find it hard to get volume or body in my hair. I like the extensions as they give me the length of course but because they also give me lots of volume and thickness! Grow do a few ranges of hair extensions such as hairspray, gold fever and beauty works. I got the Beauty Works Luxury pre bonded hair extensions which are an award winning brand.

Do they hurt?

People have asked me do they hurt and the answer is no! The first day or two they can feel slightly heavy but that’s because I am not used to them and there is a lot of hair there than what you are used to!

How much are they?

This question cant really be answered as everyones hair is different. It all depends on how many extensions you’re getting, how many shades you want, the length you want, and if you are getting other services aswell such as your own hair coloured. This is why a consultation would be done before hand. A consultation is free and this is a must to find out what exactly will be done and find out your own personal price. Grow actually do special offer some months so keep an eye out for that, I got my Beauty Works 100 strand hair extensions 22″ in length for €300. Hair extensions are not cheap, you get what you pay for!
All hair extension services include a wash and blowdry before they are installed. This service is so relaxing as the chairs pull out and vibrate! Kevin Murphy products are used to prep your hair at the sink.

What is the aftercare like?

After paying that kind of money on your hair you need to look after them and go by the rules! They are treated like your own hair but with more attention and care. Extensions can get split ends and eventually look damaged after being styled over and over again without using heat protection spray so looking after them is a must to keep that shine and condition on them.

  • The most important part of looking after hair extensions and keeping them in good condition is your shampoo and conditioner! Grow unltd use Kevin Murphy products and I started using these products when I got the extensions and just fell in love! All Kevin Murphy hair products are sulphate free, paraben free and cruelty free meaning they are super safe for hair extensions.Kevin Murphy shampoo
  • Brush your hair extensions quite a bit every day. This is important because you don’t want your hair getting knotty and tangled up. Do not half arse doing it by running your fingers through it get a hair extension brush, keep it in your bag and brush it from the root down to separate each strand.
  • When sleeping always tie your hair up as it prevents matting during the night if your like me and toss and turn during your sleep. I always braid mine or put a tight ponytail in at the back of the nape of neck. Having your hair loose it doesn’t help you may aswell not have it tied at all.
  • Make sure to separate the bonds to prevent matting. Do this by running your fingers through the bonds and you may feel a couple of strands stuck together and you just have to pull these apart. This should be done daily!

Festival Hair Ideas!

My most loved time of the year is Festival Season. With Coachella over but more music festivals to happen during the summer this is the perfect time to try these looks out. What I love about festival looks is you can be unique and go crazy!!

coachella

My favourite looks would have to be ; Space buns, coloured hair, double dutch braids, glitter roots and middle parting braids. With festival looks don’t forget to accessories! This year there is way more accessories that just a flower crown, even though I do love that! Try adding hair charms to your braids, weave some coloured wool through your hair, head scarf or even fresh flowers.

The person I look to for hair inspo is Sophie Hannah Richardson;

Maintaining your hair colour

Picture you leaving the hair salon with a beautiful newly fresh shiny hair colour and you feel amazing, but unfortantly when not looking after your hair it turns all dull faded and you feel awful. I am here to help you! Here are a few tips to help you maintain your hair colour!

Good colour starts with healthy hair.

HYDRATE!! W hile bleaching your hair isn’t the best way to start, it is necessary to do in order to achieve a lighter or bright colour.  Unhealthy, damaged hair will not hold colour well and being dry it loses its colour quickly. You may make it from black hair to blue in a week by bleaching your hair twice a day but that blue won’t hold because your hair is in awful condition. Be patient with your journey from dark hair to light hair. Make sure to nurture your hair. Hair masks and repair products are your best friends!

High quality hair colour

After healthy hair, the next most important thing is a very good hair colour product. I highly recommend going to a salon to get your hair done as we know what we are doing. . Since salon brands are gentle on your hair, it’s totally fine, and really highly recommended as they know when enough is enough with your hair.

Rinse with cool water.

This is actually a best tip if you have a funky colour in your hair. If you skip all other tips (please don’t, especially healthy hair!) this is the one to follow. Warm water opens the hair cuticle allowing colour to escape. I’m not saying you need to wash your hair with ice cold water, but in reality, the colder the better. Just use cold water for your hair and crank the heat up when doing your body.
While we’re on the subject of water, it should be noted that swimming in chlorinated water is awful for your hair colour. For good measures, just keep your hair dry as much as possible or smother your hair in conditioner before going in.

Use the right shampoo & conditioner!

The main step to long lasting colour is to use a colour save/protecting shampoo and conditioner. Depending on your colour you may need toning (e.g. for blondes that tend to go brassy, a purple shampoo is needed!) Stay away from a clarifying shampoo this stripes and gets rid of the colouring in your hair (i.e head and shoulders).

Sulfates and alcohol based products are another two huuuge things that will fade any hair color. Sulfate free shampoos can be kind of tricky to find sometimes, but they’re definitely worth switching to. Even with sulfate free shampoo, you should still try to cut back on shampoo use. Shampoo strips your hair of it’s natural oils, as well as the colour. If you’re lucky enough to not have super greasy hair skip washing every other day and use a dry shampoo on your off days. My dry shampoo of choice is Wella “Dry Me” It’s a little bit more expensive than others I’ve found and tried but easily the best!

Avoid heat styling.

If you must heat style (hey, I feel ya!), use a protectant! This Wella one is my personal favourite, I’ve been using it for a while now.

Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

Just like your skin, the sun isn’t necessarily good for your hair colour. The sun rays will bleach your hair which makes your colour fade. Try wearing a hat if you’ll be spending a long time in the sun. Highly recommended applying conditioner to your hair or even a leave in spray!

Hair for your Halloween Costume!

Halloween is just around the corner and if your like me and Halloween is your favourite holiday than you tend to go all out on your costume!

Todays post is all about the best hair products for your Halloween look. Halloween hair can be the reason why your costume stands out! If you’re looking to temporarily colour your hair, add a frightening amount of volume, or keep your hair in place, then this post is just for you! Keep scrolling to see to see what needs to be achieved to perfect your Killer hairstyle!

  • Temporary Hair Colour: I know Crazy colours are quite a “no no” in some jobs but that’s why having temporary Hair colouring is great because when shampooed it washes out!

Hair chalk is the perfect way to add temporary colour to strands of your hair.If your hair is dark, wet your hair in the areas that you want to colour. If you have lighter strands (that’s you, blondies!), skip this step or else the colour will remain for a few more washes. Strand by strand run the calk up and down your hair until you’ve reached your desired colour.

Hair colour spray works perfectly on dry hair and comes in the prettiest of colours. It also washes out after one shampoo so don’t worry about scaring your coworkers when you return to work!

  • Wigs: For costumes that the hair plays the major part in, think Ariel, Cleopatra.  Cruella De Vil, rather than changing the whole colour of your hair a wig is best off for those kind of looks. If you really wanting to keep the wig in place and make sure nothing goes away, a wig cap is the best for helping to style your look.
  • Accessories: Compared to years ago, there are so many fun ways to accessorize your hair using items like plastic spiders and spider webs. Hairbands or chains are another great way to dress up an outfit!
  • Extra hold Hairspray: If your costume requires amazing big hair, Extra hold hairspray will be your Best Friend!  This will keep your hair in place for the whole day and night! Schwarzkopf Silhouette hairspray is the best!
  • Glitter: In my opinion all costumes can be made better with a hint of sparkle! If your looking to add that sparkle to your costume there is either loose glitter or hairspray glitter.
  • Hidden Props: Are you wanting to be a character that’s hair goes to a new level of height? First think of what you can use in your hair before backing coming your hair for dear life!! To achieve a Unicorn look you can use tin foil to shape the horn and than once sliped into place all that’s left is to wrap the hair around to cover the foil! .

A great site to buy off of is Party World. This shop is in Waterford but also delivers  around Republic of Ireland. Here is some of the hair items:

Introducing Nioxin!

Nioxin_(logo)

One of the things I most enjoy about being a hairstylist is always getting to try the new products!

Firstly I will start with a little inside on the brand Nioxin. When founder Eva Graham experienced thinning hair after giving birth to her first child, she began to investigate the idea of treating the scalp with skincare methods to promote hair growth. This is when Nioxin came to origin. To define Nioxin, it is the hair care product specially invented for thinning hair solution. As we do facial on face, similarly our Scalp requires attention & care and Nioxin works on scalp health providing strength and nourishment which results into hair thicker & fuller look.

This brand is:

  • No1. globally selling salon brand for thicker fuller looking hair.
  • Winner of the stylist Choice Award for “Favourite Thinning Hair Care” since 2002Claims_d
  • Most awarded brand for thinning hair in the US
  • More than 25 years of dedicated research
  • More than 70%  of users notice thicker, fuller looking hair in just 30 days.

At The Salon@Georges Court Waterford City, we have the full range of Nioxin hair care systems to match and treat your hair issue, giving your hair growth the boost it needs. Nioxin is not just for woman it is unisex!

Strong and healthy hair begins below the surface of the scalp. Follicles can easily be clogged with sebum, hardened collagen and layers of dead skin cells. If follicles are clogged, strands cannot grow from them. The more follicles that are blocked, the fewer strands of hair that will grow. This is what makes the scalp noticeable and gives the impression of balding. Hair that does manage to grow will be weak which means hair will break easily, and they will thin out.

At the salon we offer a consultation using a Nioscope, a specialised magnifier to study the scalp, we take a very close up look at the scalp, magnified to 200%. We can show clients before and after images of their scalp so that you can see for yourself how the salon treatments are producing results. Unlike any old microscope, a Nioscope projects the view onto a monitor so clients can see their own scalp on a screen. A dermabrasion treatment is then carried out.

Dermabrasion treatment is a facial for the scalp. This is an in salon treatment and what it does is it removes dead skin cells & product build up, increases circulation and excess sebum to renew scalp skin to provide the perfect foundation for Thicker, fuller looking hair. This would be the first step and recommended to get done every 4-6 weeks than you are set to start the subscribed 3 part system which is an at home process.

Derma-Renew-Therapy_d

Nioxin system has 6 different treatment based on the type of hair of an individual. Everyone have different kind of hair ranging from thin ,length, natural, highly dense, coloured ,straight ,curly ..oh this list could go on & on without an end. So that is why Nioxin came up with six parts based on type of hair . You will be provided with best suited category of Nioxin product ranging from 1 to 6 to suit your hair, but whatever you do, DO NOT pick your own number out as using the wrong number will be no benefit. You will need to wash your hair every day to see a quicker result.

In your 3 part system there is:

  • Cleanser – This is your shampoo it removes follicle clogging sebum and environmental residues from the scalp skin and hair.
  • Optimise – This is your conditioner it is very lightweight and helps provides moisture, balance and helps the hair by reducing hair loss due to breakage. With this conditoner you massage into the scalp.
  • Treat – This is your scalp treatment it increases the diameter of each hair strand. Helps provide a refreshed scalp. Some users report redness of the scalp, which generally disappears after a week or two of continued use.  If the redness persists, try using either less frequently and/or in smaller doses.

There is another product called Diaboost which  is a leave in treatment used to increase the thickness of each exisiting hair strand for a fuller looking head of hair. This penetrates the hair and makes it manageable, full aswell as strengthening the hair at home. This allows it to grow longer and its as if you had up to 11,000 more hair strands. You apply this on clean damp hair directly on the root are to cover the scalp and massage in. Comb through hair and than blowdry and usual.

There is more products in the Nioxin range including more treatments and styling products. Information about these will be up in another blog post as these products are the main priority. If you look after your skin why not look after your hair!!

If you worry about thinning hair your not alone 😔
Thinning hair is a major issue, more than 50% of men & women suffer from thinning hair at some point in their life.
